~Next Puppy Class to Start in September~

Several times a year, Lakeland Veterinary Hospital offers a puppy class. Our next puppy class will begin September 9th, 2010.

Puppy class is designed to socialize puppies, learn basic veterinary care, and start teaching basic commands. The class is taught by one of our Certified Veterinary Technicians, Gretchen Nelson, who also presents Youth & Paws at our local elementary schools.

Gretchen has always had special interest in training and obedience. She has been training Mattie, her 12-year-old black Lab, since the dog was 4 weeks old. Mattie knows several hand and vocal signals and was her canine partner when she was involved in 4-H. Her dog, Mattie, is a certified Canine Good Citizen through the Brainerd Kennel Club.

Cost for the class is $65 for 6 weeks. Your spot in the class will be reserved when it is paid for, as space is limited and the demand is high. No refunds will be given within one week of the class beginning. You will not bring your puppy to the first class. This class will focus on orientation and discussion and may run a little longer, from 6:15-8 p.m.

Requirements:
1.  Puppies must be a minimum of 10 weeks of age and a maximum of 5 months old.

2.  Puppies must have the first set of vaccinations a minimum of 10 days prior to the first class and be current on vaccinations for their age. DHPP needs to be given by approximately 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks; Rabies needs to be given by 16 weeks; and Bordetella (Kennel Cough) needs to be given by 12 weeks.

3.  Puppies must have a healthy exam by a veterinarian, be dewormed and have a negative fecal result. Puppies also must have been treated with a topical flea product, such as Frontline. Flea collars will not be accepted, as we feel they are not effective.

4.  Please submit proof of these requirements the week before class starts, or let us know who your veterinarian is, and we can obtain these dates.

Please bring to class:
1. Small treats for rewards.
2. A buckle collar fitted to your puppy. No choke collars are permitted, (unless recommended by instructor).
3. A 6-foot leash, preferably leather. No retractable leashes.
4. Proof of a veterinary exam, vaccinations, deworming and a negative fecal test. (If you are a LVH client, we will keep track of this information.)
